The Basics

First things first. Who are you going to start out as? Once you begin playing a new character for the first time, you will start out as an egg. To hatch your egg, you must go through the appropriate stones that match the type of the character you want. The types range from water, fire, grass, ground, psychic, normal, and electric. Each one is color coded with a specific stone, and all you have to do is walk through that stone to get a good look at the pokemon available for each type. If you see one that you like, simply walk through your pokemon of choice and continue through the wall behind it. You should end up at a map called “The Crossroads.”

Now that you’re actually in the game, lets go over the basic controls. For PMU, the standard Eclipse control system in in place, with possibly a few extra addons. As you may already have guessed, the arrow keys are to move your character. Holding shift and the arrow keys together will cause your character to run. CTRL is used for fighting with other pokemon, but it can also be used for talking to NPCs. Home is used to spin your character, turning him/her clockwise with each click. To use a learned move, press Insert once you have memorized it. However, if you haven’t memorized a move, or you just don’t know any, it won’t do a thing. Keep in mind that for many moves you will have to click on the pokemon you want to attack. To pick up items off of the floor and read signs, press Enter.

Since now you know how to move and fight, let’s go over battling. You may have noticed the various pokemon running around with white names. Those are NPCs which you can fight and obtain items from them. Simply hold down CRTL while facing them in order to attack. You don’t have to keep clicking because your character attacks the whole time while your holding it down. Once that pokemon is defeated, you will gain EXP and it may or may not drop an item. If it does, simply stand on top of the item and press Enter to pick it up.

Once you have defeated enough pokemon, you will level up. Each and every time you level up, you gain 3 stat points to give to any stat. How you distribute these points is entirely up to you. On the bottom left corner of the screen you will see your stats. STR increases your attack power, DEF decreases the amount of damage you take while increasing your maximum HP, SPD increases the rate of healing over time, and PP increases the amount of MP you have and increases the attack power of your moves at the same time. Underneath each of those stats you should see a +. Click on it to distribute 1 point to that stat.

Ok, now lets go over shopping. You may have noticed while fighting pokemon that they may drop stuff like Poke, Shards, and Mushrooms. They can be used as currency in the game, although Poke is the main one used universally. You can use these to buy various items from the shops scattered all over the world. Not only that, you can sell various items to shops in order to make Poke. Shards and Shrooms are very sought after because of their usefulness as currency for armor and equipment. They are traded for various weapons and items that are invaluable to the player. Shards are traded at Sprinkle’s store while Loomy’s Treasure Trade takes shrooms. Get enough shards or shrooms and you can trade them in for some pretty good equipment.

Dungeons are a very good place to train. Find one at around your lvl and you can stay in one room and fight all you want. It is arguably the most effective way of leveling up. Not only that, they provide items that you won’t be able to obtain anywhere else.

For lower lvls, start out at Tiny woods, and train on the 1st floor. Once you think you’re strong enough, move on to Sourroot cave. That place has some of the best lvling available for the lower levels. Stay on the 3rd or 4th floors for the best lvling in that area. Make sure you use those shards and mushrooms for your equipment, and move on to tougher dungeons as you get stronger.
