Yes, they are used by search engines to index the interwebz. Basically, these bots, also know as robots or spiders, crawl the downloading web pages and sending them back to google where they are indexed so they can be used for searches and such. A google bot goes about indexing webpages by clicking on each link it see’s. You can also go to this page, http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl, and manually add url’s for the google bots to crawl. After you add the url the google bots will then crawl there way through ever link on that page and so on and so forth. This is also how google determines which pages should be closer to the top of your google search or which pages are most popular. Depending on how many links to a certain page the bot visits that page will then be placed in your google search accordingly. So a page is at the top of your google search because the google bots encountered many links to that page. Also, when you search for html pages through google, google will take your word, or string of words and match them against the headers of all the pages it has indexed to determine what pages to show you, then it will sort them according to popularity. Google bots are also interesting because many web servers that have admin sections or hidden sections will hide those pages from all users or visitors that are not authorized to view them but will not block google bots from viewing them. So, with a tool like User Agent Switcher, which is an addon for Mozilla Firefox, people are able to change their browsers user agent and view these hidden pages. Or course, some people are aware of this trick and set up a file on their server called robot.txt which contains all the pages it doesn’t want the google bot to visit. The bots will read these text files and then skip over all urls mentioned in the file. Interesting stuff. Also, google googlebombing if you want to know about something interesting that has to do with the exploitation of WWW bots.
